The data that you enter into Westplan and the results of Westplan's calculations are stored into a local database that is organised into Projects. Each project share a common collection of definable network nodes. Each project can store an unlimited number of user definable networks, and each network describes a way in which the project's nodes are inter-connected. By defining new networks, you are able to investigate various network topologies and select the most appropriate configuration.

The Westplan database is visually represented in the main window and the appearance of that window can be switched between two modes to suit your taste. The two modes are Outlook mode and Explorer mode. You can switch between these modes using the Outlook mode and Explorer mode commands on the Tools menu.
The workspace occupies the majority of Westplan's main window and is the area where all entries are made, and where all results are displayed. In the examples above, the workspace contains a network drawing, but the contents of the workspace are changed by clicking on the tabs at the top of the workspace.
The workspace is used to:
| • | Add nodes to a project |
| • | Define networks |
| • | Connect nodes using circuit switched or IP facilities |
| • | Analyse a network to optimise its facilities |
| • | Query, set and report on the inter-site routing |
| • | Display a detailed lists of defined links |
| • | Display a network report and calculation notes |
